Fred R. Schumann is the President of Schumann Consulting Services. He holds a B.A. in History from Western State College of Colorado, an M.A. in Asian Studies from the University of Oregon, and a PhD in Asia Pacific Studies from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. His dissertation was on private and public collaboration in the tourism industry. He has also conducted extensive research on modern Japanese society and overseas tourism, with a focus on how current changes in society affect consumption and leisure habits. Currently, Fred R. Schumann is teaching with University of Maryland's Asian Division (Maryland in Asia) and the University of Guam as Assistant Professor of Global Resources Management. His list of courses and resources for the courses can be found at http://sites.google.com/site/frschumann/.
Dr. Schumann has held numerous positions in the retail and service industries in the Asia Pacific region, including an assignment as Asia Pacific Regional Director for The Athlete's Foot Group, Inc. where he was responsible for 196 stores in 17 countries. He has also spent the bulk of his professional career training staff and management in organizations such as DFS and Pacific Islands Club. Prior to joining the University of Maryland, Dr. Schumann was an adjunct instructor for Temple University Japan.
For recreation, Dr. Schumann participates in local road races and marathons. In 1983, Dr. Schumann ran the length of Japan from Kagoshima to Wakkanai in 59 days to journey through the entire country, and in 1988, he represented Guam in the Olympic Marathon in Seoul.
